Broad Strokes

Cat Cohen’s very particular brand of delulu, silly girl drama queen humor speaks to me on a deep level. I fell in love with her on Las Culturistas many years ago, and was immediately hooked on her kookalook, quirky star power. She may not be for everyone, but I’ll admit, her silly rrrandom way of existing just uplifts and heals something inside me. This show does have a narrative, as she recounts a particular health scare she had three years ago, told through song, but it’s more akin to stand up comedy or cabaret than a play. She’s not reenacting or living the story as much as telling it. She has such a distinct comedic voice and style, and this production design is LAVISH, glamorous, grand and theatrical in the highest gothic caliber! And that costume is a slay. She has a lovely singing voice, perhaps not the most brilliant vocal range or technical skill, but just right for what she’s doing. Saw this in development last spring and in Edinnburgh last summer, and even on my third viewing, I certainly laughed plenty and enjoyed it!! Queen Cat, consider me a lifelong fan, diva!
